For a few months now, a few others and myself have been working on ideas fueled by the belief we each have to do something greater than simply working a regular job until the age of 60. These ideas have been slowly taking shape into something real, something exciting, all while still working that 'regular job' to keep up the income, etc.
I was doing everything to keep my bosses from finding out. It was one of these 'stealth startups'. Why? Well, frankly, I still believe that the minute your manager knows you have an alternative long term plan, there is an unseen 'cap' put on your potential; they don't want to put too much responsibility or investment into you if you aren't there for the long haul. And fair enough, I get that. So I did everything I could to keep it low.
Then, I got a strange meeting invite. One with just me, my manager and the president of the company. Yeah, really strange.
People had started acting weird, just a little offish. I just knew something was up. But then I kept second guessing myself as well, I was probably just overthinking, over-stressing.
I messaged one of my other colleagues, just had to check and see if this was a kind of meeting that everyone was having, or just me. Yep, he hadn't gotten an invite for anything of the likes. *Cringe* That was last night. I couldn't get to sleep. I turned my phone off.
This morning: Woke up like a rocket. Tried to do my morning routine, act cool, and nope, it just wasn't working. My stomach was twisted, had an incredible gut-bomb, stomachache, you name it, I had it.
Finally made it to work, same time as usual... but things just weren't the usual. There was 30 minutes to go before this meeting's scheduled time. It felt like the clock was just crawling...
20 minutes...
1o minutes...
I went the bathroom. I just knew something YUUUGE was gonna happen. something awful.
5 minutes...
I casually try to make conversation with a colleague, hit another dead end. This is bad!
SH** - it's time. 7:30am
Boss walks by... "you ready?" He was tense, I was tense. We awkwardly walk down the hall and into the conference room.
Thud.
The door shut. We sit down in silence. Two words into it, I was doggone right. He found out about my business!
I felt like throwing up. I had just finished a record quarter at this company in March. So far in April, I had already smashed my main KPIs for the entire second quarter! I was on a roll...or so I thought. I just couldn't believe this is how it would end... fired!
But then the strangest thing happened. I literally did a double take. My boss says these words:
"I know a starting your own company is your dream. We will give you 3 months of pay, go do it, we can touch base after the 3 months and re-assess your future then, whether it's with us or on your own."
Whoa. Whoa. Yes, he said that.
Seriously, I'm still playing this over and over in my head, emotions still running wild in this little brain of mine. This is the greatest opportunity of my life at my fingertips!
And so go the thrills of being an entrepreneur.
